Redactions

The long-awaited Mueller Report investigating Russian interference in the 2016 United States presidential election was released on April 18, 2019. It immediately set off a contentious firestorm of accusations, denials and allegations from all actors within the political discourse. The report was heavily redacted using a color-coded system that attempted to explain why particular information could not be communicated to the public. Text redacted for “harm to ongoing matter” was shown in white, “personal privacy” in green, “investigative technique” in yellow and “grand jury” in red.

Redactions is an animated typographic poster in which I sought to explore this unique visual system, with redacted bits of text moving throughout the frame in an isometric, architectonic manner. What happens when design standards are put together for the sole purpose of not communicating?
